World Computer Literacy Day History:

Computers have gone through various improvements and designs since the times of Charles Babbage who discovered the mechanical computer that displayed capability for simple mathematical operations in the early 1820s. Computers have been modified at every instance and certain basic features like size of these old computers have gone through several modifications and are now so small that they can be held in your palms. And today, computers have become such an integral part of our society that it almost impossible to imagine our lives without them today.

The term "computer literacy"" is usually attributed to Arthur Luehrmann, a physicist at Dartmouth College who was a colleague of Kemeny and Kurtz who introduced the BASIC programming language in 1964. Luehrmann became a tireless advocate of computers in teaching. At an April 1972 American Federation of Information Processing Societies (AFIPS) conference, Luehrmann gave a talk titled "Should the computer teach the student, or vice-versa?"

The origin of World Computer Literacy Day traces back to India as it was launched in 2001 by an Indian education oriented organization called N.I.I.T to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Founded in 1981 by Rajendra Singh Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani, N.I.I.T, which stands for National Institute of Information Technology, is a skills and talent development company. World Computer Literacy Day was founded by the company in response to a study that revealed that men formed the majority of computer users in the world especially in the developing world.

As a result, N.I.I.T took up the cause to educate more women and children by equipping them with computer literacy skills. This day was created with a goal to increase awareness about the importance of having computer literacy in the rapidly transforming world especially among the women and children and today it is observed every year on 2nd December. Ever since its introduction massive transformation can be seen throughout our world as now there are much more female users but still there are many people in our world especially among these sections who lacks computer literacy.

World Computer Literacy Day Significance:

On the event of Computer Literacy Day, people emphasize the importance of computers in daily lives. Computer literacy differs from digital literacy, which is the ability to communicate or find information on digital platforms.  Comparatively, computer literacy measures the ability to use computers and to maintain a basic understanding of how they operate. It's an innovation that has single-handedly changed the course of the world so it also salutes that innovation which led to crucial inventions which completely changes our world for the good. The day is also a reminder that many people still don't have access to computers, often due to factors such as poverty and underdevelopment.
