National Repeal Day History:

The turn of the twentieth century was an  interesting time in America as at that time alcohol consumption was at an all time high for men in the country. The Women's Christian Temperance Union, which had been promoting Prohibition for many years, believed alcohol was the cause of many, if not all, social ills. Mistruths like this were spread. Lines were drawn. Bars and taverns were vandalized. People were killed. On January 16th, 1919, Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment, outlawing alcohol and ostensibly putting an end to drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty.

Ironically, America's thirst for alcohol increased during Prohibition, and organized crime rose up to replace formerly legal methods of production and distribution. While proponents of Prohibition argued that the amendment would be more effective if enforcement were increased, respect for the law diminished and drunkenness, crime and resentment towards the federal government ran rampant. As bootlegging and moonshining became a common practice at the time which led increase in organized crimes over the country which resulted in mafia and gang wars across the country.

Furthermore prohibition has also led to creation of speakeasies which people used for continuing their consumption of alcohol in the country. Government wasn't able to enforce people to not commit drinking and thus prohibition started becoming a failure after initial success. Over the course of the next thirteen years, support for Prohibition waned as the nation awoke to the widespread problems Prohibition had caused. The number of repeal organizations, many of which were comprised of former Prohibitionists increased, and in 1932 Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for President on a platform that included the repeal of Prohibition.

The thirteen years of Prohibition were a dark time for the United States, as the criminalization of alcohol led not only to a rise in civil delinquency and organized crime, but also to the loss of customs associated with the production, preparation, and consumption of alcohol. We celebrate Repeal Day because December 5th marks a return to the rich traditions of craft fermentation and distillation, the legitimacy of the American bartender as a contributor to the culinary arts, and the responsible enjoyment of alcohol as a sacred social custom.

National Repeal Day Significance:

Today, while celebrating National Repeal Day we celebrates the fact that we are free to consume alcohol without any restrictions. It is hard to imagine today but at once for just getting some good alcohol people had to struggle a lot and it was considered illegal for that people could also be sentenced to prison as punishment. So we are not obliged to any of these which is a great freedom that we have which must be appreciated as still there are many countries and places in our world where consumption of alcohol is illegal.

This is also unique thing to celebrate which makes it even more special as the repeal of the 18th Amendment is the only national holiday written into the nation's constitution, following passage of the 33rd Amendment in 1933. That means you're practically doing your patriotic duty by celebrating it, which is one of many good excuses you can use for enjoying this day by celebrating our delicious and exciting friend Mr. Alcohol! So this is a day when we also celebrate and recognize the importance of alcohol.

This day also celebrates the roaring 1920s as it was a changing time for the country and no matter how many times prohibition caused but because of it we also seen the change in society like men and women started to drink together without caring for others might say, different groups of thr country started to come together to celebrate alcohol. So it was an very important period which played a huge role on how the society works today and that fact deserves to be celebrated.

Today we can see that most people enjoy drinking alcohol in all its forms. Apart from the relaxing effect, people find many excuses for drinking it like they refer those articles saying drink a glass of red wine because it helps reduce your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. So that's three glasses of red wine we're allowed to drink, right there, just for its health benefits. And then there are cocktails and what about beers these are the things which can't be avoided. But still we would advise you to drink responsibly then everything is fine!
