International Civil Aviation Day History:

Since the first powered flight by the Wright Brothers on December 17, 1903, for the first time, airplanes began to be used for passenger and airmail service. Giant rigid airships became the first aircraft to transport passengers and cargo over great distances. The most successful Zeppelin was the Graf Zeppelin. It flew over one million miles, including an around-the-world flight in August 1929. However, the dominance of the Zeppelins over the airplanes of that period, which had a range of only a few hundred miles, was diminishing as airplane design advanced. The "Golden Age" of the airships ended on May 6, 1937, when the Hindenburg caught fire, killing 36 people.

Great progress was made in the field of aviation during the 1920s and 1930s, such as Charles Lindbergh's solo transatlantic flight in 1927, and Charles Kingsford Smith's transpacific flight the following year. One of the most successful designs of this period was the Douglas DC-3, which became the first airliner that was profitable carrying passengers exclusively, starting the modern era of passenger airline service. By the beginning of World War II, many towns and cities had built airports, and there were numerous qualified pilots available. The war brought many innovations to aviation, including the first jet aircraft and the first liquid-fueled rockets.

Soon Commercial Aircrafts began to transport people and cargo as designs grew larger and more reliable. By the 1950s, the development of civil jets grew, beginning with the de Havilland Comet, though the first widely-used passenger jet was the Boeing 707 because it was much more economical than other planes at the time. By the 1960s, International travel became increasingly popular, and passenger volume increased significantly. Because of this tourism and business have both been changed forever due to flying, not to mention the cultural connections that have been enabled like never before.

The first International Civil Aviation Day was held in 1994 as part of ICAO's 50th anniversary and in 1996 the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day. They agreed to try and use the day to reinforce the importance of civil aviation to social and economic development, and to recognize the unique role the International Civil Aviation Organization plays in helping countries to cooperate and bring to life a truly global transit network. This is a day for people to recognize the importance that civil aviation industry today plays in our lives.

International Civil Aviation Day Significance:

International Civil Aviation Day is an occasion that marks the anniversary of the signing of the Chicago Convention. It is celebrated annually to help people realize the significance of aviation and its contribution to the socioeconomic development of the world. Civil Aviation Day especially focuses on international air travel and how it connects the world together. International Civil Aviation Day is a day to reflect on the importance of global aviation networks and to honor the workforce engaged in the aviation industry. The UN is now focused on making the aviation industry more sustainable to meet the Agenda 2030 goals.

Seventy-five years after ICAO's foundation, the International Civil Aviation network carries over four billion passengers annually. The global Air Transport sector supports 65.5 million jobs and USD 2.7 trillion in global economic activity, with over 10 million women and men working within the industry to ensure 120,000 flights and 12 million passengers a day are carried safely to their destinations. The wider supply chain, flow-on impacts and jobs in tourism made possible by air transport show that at least 65.5 million jobs and 3.6 per cent of global economic activity are supported by the aviation industry according to research by the Air.

International Civil Aviation Day is a day to enjoy the extraordinary things humans are capable of and to look at the future, as we continue to innovate and bring cultures closer together. As the UN has now adopted Agenda 2030, a pledge for the reduction of pollution that comes with the end goal of a new era in global sustainable development, the importance of aviation as an engine of global connectivity remains just as relevant. As such, in recognition of ICAO's 75th anniversary, the council selected the theme "75 Years of Connecting the World" for the 2019 celebrations, which will run through to  2024.

One of the most fascinating about the civil aviation industry is how futuristic it is! The aviation industry has given us some of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, and this innovation is ongoing. Airbus, for example, is currently planning its "Smarter Skies" initiative, which it hopes by 2050 will: Decrease flight time of every flight by 13 minutes; save nine million tons of excess fuel every year; and avoid 28 million tons of avoidable CO2 emission annually. So we can prepare ourselves to witness more such innovations happening in the civil aviation industry in near future which will definitely bring change to our world for the good.

International Civil Aviation Day Theme:

The ICAO Council establishes a special anniversary theme for International Civil Aviation Day every five years, coinciding with the ICAO anniversary- 2014/2019/2024/2029, etc. The council representative also selects a single theme for the four intervening years between the anniversary period.

The theme for the 75th Anniversary of Internation Civil Aviation Day held in 2019 was "75 Years of Connecting the World." The ICAO Council has decided that from now until 2023, the theme of International Civil Aviation Day will be: "Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development".

This theme iterates the need to focus on innovation for the sake of developing the global aviation industry further and making it sustainable.

Innovation is the way forward. This is true for all areas of human endeavour, including aviation. And just as in the past, aviation will be a key innovator and early adopter when it comes to the technologies of the future. ICAO's main role in supporting aviation innovation is through a responsive and dynamic regulatory assessment approach that encourages new developments and accelerates their harmonization so that the sector can take advantage of the incredible new performance and capabilities these developments promise.
