World Freedom Day History:

World Freedom Day was created to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall post-World War II. But this day is not so much about the Wall but more about what its falling represented. It marked the end of communism throughout Eastern and Central Europe, ensuring liberty to all. It was created to celebrate the reunification of loved ones separated by the Iron Curtain and differing ideologies, and ultimately serves to acknowledge that the resolve of the masses can shift boundaries, break unfavorable resolutions and ultimately determine the type of leadership they desire so as to live is a freer, more fair society. The holiday was established as a federal observance in 2001 by then President George W. Bush.

It all started after the second world war during which Nazi Germany lost the war and was occupied by the allied forces of the second world war. The western part of Geemany was occupied by the forces of French, British and the Americans while the Eastern part was occupied by the Soviet Union. So in this way West Germany came under democratic system on the other hand East Germany came under the communist system. As a result East Germany gained status as an independent country in 1949. And the capital city of Berlin was also divided between West and East Germany.

Later a wall was created between the two sides by the communist regime to prevent the immigration of people from East Berlin to West Berlin and the rest of Western Europe. This happened because the West Germany adopted the capitalist free market system which led to rapid development and prosperity in the West Germany while on the other hand East Germany economic policies failed under the communist system leading to poverty among the people who then tried to escape it by moving out of East Germany.  From 1961 to 1989, an estimated 5,000 people escaped over the Berlin Wall. More than 100 people were killed in the process.

However the resistance grew stronger and stronger by every passing year among the people as the Berlin wall torn the families and friends apart who were literally the same people. As East Germany continued to suffer under communist rule, the people became furious and started to protest against the regime and seperation. However the communist regime tried to suppress this movement but eventually failed against the people's will of freedom and justice. In 1989, travel restrictions became lenient in East Germany, leading to thousands of people impatiently climbing the wall and hitting the wall with chisels and hammers. The Berlin Wall was chipped away bit by bit and eventually came down on 9 November 1989. One year later, Germany became a single country again with the end of communist  rule in East Germany.

World Freedom Day Significance:

This event in history is one of the most important turning point in human history especially in terms of modern human history. As it was not just East Germany which got rid of the oppressive and cruel communist regime but it also led to a domino effect and slowly many of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe started to get rid of the authoritarian communist regimes. Infact it was so powerful event and it eventually caused the fall of the Soviet Union and as a result many of the countries fot free from communist rule. This has been only made possible because if the people's will towards freedom and liberty and that's the power of freedom which is celebrated on this day.

For a lot of people, it is crazy to think about a world without freedom. Many people have experienced freedom in all of their lives. However, for a lot of people, this is not the case, and so it is important that we understand this and that we look for ways to make changes. If you don't know what it means to be afraid to voice your opinion, then you can consider yourself very lucky to live in a place where liberty is a priority as well as a basic human right. And like all good things, liberty should be celebrated, and that's what World Freedom Day is all about as it is about recognizing and celebrating the right to freedom.

Unfortunately, freedom is still under threat in many parts of the world today. Many seek power and control over entire nations, inciting violence and manipulating economic sectors. Motive-driven tyrants exist and World Freedom Day recognizes the need to ensure freedom for everyone as it believes that freedom is a fundamental right, and everyone is deserving of it amd no human being in our world besides all of the differences be it race, religion, culture or language should be denied this right. So it aims to encourage people around the world to raise their voices for freedom of people around the world.

This day also gives a message to all of those people who takes their freedom for granted so this day reminds them about the importance of freedom in our lives. As unfortunately, there are many, many places in the world where these freedoms are not available to most people, who are forced to live empty, unfulfilling lives, without raising their demands or asking for rights so the rulers of their countries don't have them thrown in jail or worse. So we should never take our freedom for granted and should always be grateful towards it and we need to always ensure that our freedom is not threatened.

World Freedom Day Celebrations:

For this occasion, conservative youth groups such as Young America's Foundation and the College Republicans urge students to commemorate this day (which they mark as the start of "Freedom Week," thus including Veterans Day) by "celebrating victory over communism" through provocative flyer campaigns and activism projects.

Many conservative political commentators and activists use World Freedom Day as an occasion in which to acclaim President Ronald Reagan, whom they regard as being responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.

Even though World Freedom Day specifically represents one event in history, it is important to know the true meaning of freedom and your rights. Many people are unaware of their freedom and rights within the legal system, so it is important to be informed about it. So use this opportunity to know all about your rights and if you found out that your rights are being violated then you have the right to protest and raise your voice towards this issue.
