Singles Day which was originally called as Bachelors' Day is a Chinese commercial holiday which celebrates singlehood through shopping and recreation!

It started as a celebration of being single, where solo students at China's Nanjing University chose November 11 (because 11/11 looks like a group of sticks) to celebrate, rather than lament being partnerless.

From those humble roots, Singles Day has become the single most lucrative online shopping holiday in the world, with sales reaching $25 billion in 2017, easily surpassing Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.

Singles Day China History:

Being single is not new to human society there were people throughout human history who opted to remain bachelor for a long time or throughout their life. However in old times there was a large stigma around it amd people who were single for a long time or bachelor were looked upon and it was not considered a good thing. So during that period remaining single was very rare for a long time as most people were married just after achieving adulthood which is not the case in today's modern world where most people likes to get married late in their life after settling with their work and career. Many also chose to remain single or bachelor for their life and so this day celebrates their choice and singlehood overall.

Singles Day is a Chinese holiday that originated from Nanjing University when four single students decided to create a celebration for single people in 1993. The date of 11th November was chosen as it corresponds with four "ones", representing four singles. It was originally called Bachelor's Day but later it became popular as Singles Day. This idea spread to different universities and eventually into mainstream culture, evolving over time as something men and women can enjoy. The holiday serves as a time when people can meet up and socialize at parties, and has also become one of the most popular shopping days in China.

The anti-Valentine's Day celebration of singledom caught on and spread across universities throughout China, generally characterized by fun, harmless events. For example, one student reserved every other seat in a movie theater, prohibiting couples from sitting next to each other during a screening of Beijing Love Story, an aptly named romantic film. That level of mischief is the most that holiday's celebration extends into anti-couples. For the most part, the holiday is a shopping holiday, thanks in part to Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang, who created the first Singles Day sale in 2009, sparking a trend that has surpassed Cyber Monday in single-day transactions.

Shopping becomes a source of wealth and entertainment for the Chinese economy, and in 2017, according to Forbes.com, Alibaba says over 15 million products from more than 140,000 brands participated in the holiday, including 60,000 international brands that offered discounts on Tmall, a retail company operated by Alibaba, which increased up from 100,000 the year before. Alibaba also launched a new luxury retail website, JD.com, and opened it's first automated, robot-managed warehouse to help smooth the transition of the intense sales. So shopping has become a huge part of the celebrations of this day.

Singles Day China Significance:

The date of 11th November (11/11), was chosen for the Singles Day in China because the numeral 1 resembles a bare stick, which is a popular Chinese Internet slang for an unmarried man who does not add 'branches' to the family tree. The four '1's also abstractly refer to the demographic group of single people and it also represents the fact that this day was founded by four single students. Paradoxically, the holiday has become a popular date on which to celebrate relationships: more than 4,000 couples got married in Beijing on this date in 2011, far greater than the daily average of 700 marriages.

This day was created to encourage the single people all around the country. As most people even today people gets extremely sad or desperate on the fact of being single as they think themselves as a loser or lost in the race of this world which is obviously wrong emotion to think instead of thinking negative and depressed on singlehood people should proudly celebrate their single life and that's why this day is important as it gives them a chance to proudly celebrate their singlehood without any shame or prejudice. I mean it is well known that a person loves himself/herself the mostbtyan anyone than why not just celebrate yourself for a day!

Most newspapers, magazines, TV shows and movies make it seem like everyone is coupled up. (Like, how come nobody ever chooses "it's complicated" for their relationship status, anymore?). But if we look at the actual statistics then we can realize that it is actually single adults which outnumbers the adults in relationship all across the world. So see friends singles are the majority so if you are single then you are actually part of the majority so you should never feel shamed or neglected on being single instead you should acknowledge this fact by celebrating your singlehood.

Shopping is also one of the major to celebrate this day. I mean most people likes shopping or even if they don't like do it by themselves most everybody likes gifts and things have with them. And so thus day gives people an amazing shopping experience as many retailers on this day also offers special deals and heavy discounts for their customers for the special occasion. This is an absolute amazing time for shopping especially in China. While the holiday may have gone commercial, the celebrations and theme are still in line with its founding, to celebrate who you are, your friends, and your loved ones, regardless of what your relationship status is.

Singles Day China Celebrations:

Singles Day – similar to Cyber Monday or Black Friday – is a shopping holiday. While it initially started as a celebration of oneself and love of oneself, it has evolved largely into a shopping feast because of strong push by many major Chinese retailers. This day gives a chance for individuals to treat themselves with nice goods and fun products.

Some of the traditions of the day still remain the same today like taking yourself out for dinner, taking yourself out to the movies, sheepishly ruining dates, going on "dates" with your other single friends to celebrate independence and self-love. Overall it is a day to celebrate yourself by taking an extra care and affection of yourself.

Another great way that you can celebrate this way is by writing an appreciation list. Who for? Yourself, of course! Write a list of all of the things that you love about yourself, and post it to social media. This could be anything from the fact that you went to the gym or that you made yourself a good meal.
