National Happy Hour Day History:

The words "happy" and "hour" have appeared together for centuries when describing pleasant times. In act I, scene 2 of William Shakespeare's King Henry V, he says, "Therefore, my lords, omit no happy hour/That may give furtherance to our expedition..." The use of the phrase "happy hour" to refer to a scheduled period of entertainment is, however, is more recent in time. One possible origin of the term "happy hour," in the sense of a scheduled period of entertainment, is from the United States Navy.

As in early 1913, a group of homemakers called the "Happy Hour Social" organised "semi-weekly smokers" on board USS Arkansas. The name "Happy Hour Club," "Happy Hour Social Club," and similar variants had been in use as the names of social clubs, primarily by women's social clubs, since at least the early 1880s. By June 1913, the crew of Arkansas had started referring to their regularly scheduled smokers as happy hours. The happy hours included a variety of entertainment not just drinking alcohol, including boxing and wrestling matches, music, dancing, and movies.

The idea of drinking before dinner has its roots in the Prohibition era. When the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act were passed banning alcohol consumption, people would host "cocktail hours", also known as "happy hours", at a speakeasy before eating at restaurants where alcohol could not be served. Cocktail lounges continued the trend of drinking before dinner. And this trend became very popular all over the country and continued all the way upto the end of prohibition in the country. However after the end of prohibition this trend became less popular.

By the end of WWII, happy hours were a "thing." The relaxing practice had spread throughout U.S. naval fleets. But on April 25, 1959, a "Saturday Evening Post" article popularized, "happy hour" for everybody outside the Navy.  According to "Bustle," an article entitled, "The Men Who Chase Missiles" described the hazards for people who "lived and worked on remote island outposts tracking Cape Canaveral's missile launches… "Except for those who spend too much during "happy hour" at the bar and there are few of these, the money mounts up fast."

National Happy Hour Day Significance:

Happy hour is a marketing term for a time when a venue such as a restaurant or bar offers reduced prices on alcoholic drinks. Discounted menu items like appetizers are often served during happy hour. This is a way for bars and restaurants to draw in more business before or after peak business hours and that's what happens during this day also that many bars and restaurants around the country gives offer on drinks on this day to attract more and more customers.

By celebrating this day, we are not saying we need booze to get along with our coworkers, but it doesn't hurt, either. After a hard day at the office, let your hair down with the people who helped you get through it. We might all have responsibilities outside the office, but, sometimes, all you really need is one good Happy Hour to keep you happy and satisfied with your life and work and this thing is very important and that's why everyone deserves a nice moment of relaxation to take a break from all of their work and this is what this day offers you.

National Happy Hour Day gives us the opportunity to explore new places without thinking too much of the budget issues. We like adventure as much as the next person but some prospects are riskier than others. You know how a friend recommends a place you have to check out? Well, if it's the friend who likes everything, you could be in trouble in terms of finances. Fortunately, happy hour gives us a chance to check out a new spot, but at a discount, which makes the snacks delicious and the cocktails even better!

Massachusetts was the first U.S. state to implement a statewide ban on happy hours in 1984. Several other U.S. states also have  similar restrictions implemented. The reason for each ban varies, but include to prevent drunk driving, to avoid the nuisance to neighbors from loud crowds and public drunkenness, and to discourage unhealthy consumption of a large amount of alcohol in a short time. That's why it is our responsibility to drink responsibly and behave nicely after drinking. We shouldn't take too much advantage of our freedom sometimes, just keep this thing in mind and enjoy this day.
