International Girls Day History:

From the start of the first human civilizations only we can see that the girls have been always told to strictly follow rules on how they look and act and this was common in almost every culture and civilizations of the world throughout the human history. From a long time girls were also prohibited from many things like work to make a living or travelling alone or basic education and care. However since the turn of the modern century the things have changed for good but still there are many unspoken social norms which makes girls to act in a certain way or not to dream too big or act too freely or carefree.

The origins of this day can be traced all the way back to 125 years ago when in 1897 at State Female Normal School in Farmville, Virginia, four women came together and forever forged their friendship by creating the sisterhood we know today as Kappa Delta. Now, 125 years later, Kappa Delta has 168 collegiate chapters and over 200 active alumnae chapters filled with inspiring, confident women. When you join Kappa Delta, you join a network of friendship, leadership, confidence and action.

It is quite a progressive initiative, coming from a time when women weren't allowed to be radical. Four college students Sara Turner White, Julia Tyler Gardiner Wilson, Lenora Ashmore Blackiston, and Mary Sommerville Sparks Hendrick started the sorority. Millions of women have joined since then, and have been contributing to its efforts as mentors and volunteers. Two of K.D.'s major philanthropies include Prevent Child Abuse America and Girls Scouts of the USA. Every year, the sorority hosts various programs, from educational events to miscellaneous activities, to promote its initiatives.

Kappa Delta created the International Girls Day in 2009 to celebrate the girls in our lives, build their confidence and inspire them to reach their full potential. For eight years, Kappa Deltas have celebrated on or around Nov. 14 by hosting girls in their community for a day filled with confidence-building, goal-setting and fun adventures. Girls leave the event with a confidence boost and a reminder that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Girls with ideas become women who change the world. This International Girls Day, celebrate the girls in your life by telling each one that she can do anything.
