Forget Me Not Day History:

Throughout the United States history there have been many wars and conflicts during which the United States Armed Forces got itself engaged in and as you know that wars often results in casualties and losses and as a result many soldiers those who have fought in all of these wars have suffered many losses of through their injuries caused in the battlefield like losing of limbs, becoming disabled which is very unfortunate but this is a reality with most of the soldiers had to live through. So as a way to recognize their sacrifice and contribution this day was established.

National Forget Me Not Day goes back to the times of World War I when American soldiers would come back from the war wounded. These veterans at the time were coming back at rates far higher than the government expected, and there were very few organizations and services available to help for those wounded in the war. This trend was later seen in second world as well and this day continued to be extensively celebrated in all the wars which America fought like the Korean war, Vietnam War and the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. So here this day was used as a way to pay tribute to the wounded soldiers.

Forget Me Not Day as we know it was established following World War I, when Judge Robert S. Marx, himself a WWI veteran, declared the holiday in honor of veterans who had suffered physical losses in the line of battle, those who had lost limbs, blood, and other integral body parts. Along with the holiday, Marx inaugurated the tradition of selling the popular forget-me-not flowers, repurposing them to raise money for helping wounded veterans.

After returning from the war, he helped establish the Disabled American Veterans Foundation in 1920, which annually celebrates the holiday through the annual sale fo Forget-me-nots and annual caucuses ever since. People on this day remember the veterans who lost their lives and honor disabled veterans who still live to this day. People thank these veterans through various means, sending thank you letters, spending time with them to learn about their life stories, and treating them with the respect they deserve.

Forget Me Not Day Significance:

Forget-me-nots are the tiny blue meadow flowers that are incredibly symbolic. From the loss of loved ones to simply missing a childhood friend, the flowers have become synonymous with feelings of missing and longing. In New Zealand, Forget Me Not Day is dedicated to those afflicted with, or who have lost loved ones due to the cognitive degenerative Alzheimer's disease. So there are many versions of Forget Me Not Day which are celebrated for loss of loved ones but this one is mostly about remembering veterans sacrifice during their war efforts.

Forget-me-nots represent true love and giving someone this flower means you truly love and respect this person. It is a testament to your relationships and promises the other person that you will never forget them in your thoughts. It is a symbol of fidelity and being truthful to someone you love. It also represent long lasting connections that can exist between not only lovers, but also friends. This connection is so strong that can't be broken or shaken by anything or anyone no matter what the situation becomes.

It is easy to think about those who lost their lives in the line of battle, however, we don't think of those who have lost their limbs but returned from war alive as often. Forget Me Not Day reminds us of the sacrifices living veterans have made and, in some cases, still continue to make. Just because a soldier returns home does not mean he or she will have an easy transition to civilian life. The loss of limbs or severe mental distress, such as PTSD, can cause setbacks and handicaps they must overcome after the military. Forget Me Not Day brings awareness to the less celebratory side of returning from war.

Not everyone is made for military service, however, that doesn't mean we can't support our country and those that fight for it. Observing Forget Me Not Day is an excellent way to pay homage to and thank those who do go out and risk their lives, and who have suffered in the process. National Forget Me Not Day aims at encouraging people to remember the services those have gone through during a time that was believed to be the war to end all wars.
