Commemoration Day History:

Throughout the human history to present times it is seen that everyone wishes for a peaceful life; an untroubled society in which we can live the life we want, travel the world, fall in love, pursue a career, raise our children with love, and more. But the peace that is enjoyed in nearly all societies of the world today has been fought and won with the blood and sweat of various soldiers and civilians who sacrificed their lives at one time or another. And this day tells the same story too as it honors and recognizes the contribution of all the Emirati martyrs who died for the peace and security of the nation.

This day also commemorates an important historical event as this was day when Salem Bin Khamis Al Dahmani the first Emirati policeman died for the country, this incident happened on November 30, 1971, just before the official formation of the U.A.E. as a nation. He was killed in an unpremeditated attack by Iranian Naval forces on an expedition into Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs, following the departure of the British forces who recently ceded ownership of the protectorate.

Although this day commemorates with this incident but this day recognizes and remembers the contributions and sacrifices of all the Emirati martyrs throughout the nation's history. So the soldiers who fell during the First Gulf War (1990-1991) while liberating Kuwait will also be remembered along with martyrs such as Saif Ghubash, the government minister who was assassinated in 1977, and Khalifa Al Mubarak, an Emirati ambassador who was assassinated in 1984. Others who have died in the line of duty will always be honoured.

The history of the UAE Commemoration Day is not very old. It was announced by His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, in August, 2015. At first the date of November 30 was chosen as the date commemorated the valiant policeman's death, as a holiday to celebrate the selfless service and sacrifice of all who had died in service of the country. The observance of November 30 as Commemoration Day was being maintained on the same date every year from 2015 through 2019 before the date was adjusted to December 1st now.
