National Redhead Day History:

The origins of the first red-haired people in our world in our recorded history can found in the Balkans, Central and Western Europe between 2000-1500 BC and that's why these regions are now referred as the historical homeland of the red-haired people and their culture. Throughout the history there had been various portrayals of red-haired people across the world. In some places they were aired for their uniqueness and beauty but in most cases they were ridiculed amd even discriminated for their differences.

There were many depictions of redheads also in various religious texts around the world however most of them were painted in negative way. One of the better-known accounts is seen in Jewish mythology, detailing the appearance of Lilith, a demon who wreaked havoc in the Garden of Eden. She was often depicted as a red-headed woman. Similarly, Judas, who infamously betrayed Jesus in the Bible, is often portrayed in medieval paintings as having flaming red hair and a crimson beard.

In historical folklore, redheads were often accused of being witches who "stole the fire of hell" and were later burned at the stake during the Spanish Inquisition. Additionally, red-haired people were seen as "unclean" nymphomaniacs. All of this, of course, is untrue but some of the stereotypes of redheads have lasted to this day. On National Redhead Day, there is a message to redheads on this day to rock your hair any way you like and hold your flame-colored head up proudly.

We have two redhead sisters to thank for coming up with Love Your Red Hair Day or National Redhead Day. In 2011, Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti wanted people to be proud of their red hair in response to negative posts on a Kick a Ginger Day site. (The term, 'ginger,' is seen as a derogatory description of people with red hair." As part of their slapback, the sisters created their website, 'How To Be a Redhead,' which eventually added National Redhead Day!

National Redhead Day Significance:

Red hair is a hair color found in only one to two percent of the human population of our world so you can understand that how rare it is actually, although it appears with greater frequency (two to six percent) among people of Northern or Northwestern European ancestry and lesser frequency in other populations. It is most common in individuals homozygous for a recessive allele on chromosome 16 that produces an altered version of the MC1R protein.

Red hair varies in hue from a deep burgundy or bright copper, or auburn, to burnt orange or red-orange to strawberry blond. Characterized by high levels of the reddish pigment pheomelanin and relatively low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin, it is associated with fair skin color, lighter eye color, freckles, and sensitivity to ultraviolet light. Cultural reactions to red hair have been varied. The term "redhead" has been in use since at least 1510.

Redheads also has a lot of symbolism behind them. One of the most popular symbol of a redhead is of a fiery personality that is ruled by its passions, a strong-headed person who knows what they want and how to get it. They say the fire inside matches the fire of the hair, and to many red hair is the very definition of what it means to be Irish but that's not actually true as only about 10% of the Irish are actually redheads which is still one of the highest proportion in the world but nowhere near as fully Irish.

For a very long time in human history redheads were actually not appreciated very much infact they were even discriminated or persecuted at some moments in our history. It is only in the tien of the modern century when people started to appreciate redheads and it became a norm in our society. Today most of the people admire redheads however still many people refrain from appreciating redheads so this day is celebrated to remind them about appreciating redheads for their uniqueness.
